We are situated in central Karori, beside the Community Centre and behind the Recreation Centre, close to public transport and a public car park. We have been running as an arts and crafts society since 1966. In the early years classes and groups met in various church halls or each other’s homes to share their common interests and companionship. Then in 1993 the Newman Centre was built as the result of the generosity of Dorothy and Stanley Newman. It was purpose built for our members so that they can pursue their various arts and crafts, from drawing and painting, photography to quilting, embroidery, card craft, book making and many more. It has facilities for the disabled, including a lift and we are a charitable trust. We hold 2 major exhibitions at the Newman Centre each year: • An Art Exhibition and Sale which includes art & photography – usually around June/July, and • A Craft & Quilt Exhibition and Sale – usually October/November for our members to display and sell their work. We have free art and free craft groups running throughout the year. All it costs is our annual membership (See Join Us for more details).
