The Wairoa Star was first published on September 23rd 1921, from its premises located in Delhi Street, Wairoa under the management of its owner Mr. Deighton and editor Harry Stanton. The Wairoa Star was not the first newspaper publication in the district. Its predecessor was The Wairoa Free Press which first began circulation in 1877. That publication was surpassed by the Wairoa Standard after its demise in 1880 by fire, the great destroyer, claiming another victim in Wairoa’s early history. Like its predecessors, The Wairoa Star is also a commercial printing enterprise and today embraces a retail commercial stationery and gift store, coupled with a dedicated design and copy centre, photo kiosk business as well as the newspaper. Ownership of the newspaper and business has also evolved over the 100 years of its publication. Today its shareholders include the Gisborne Herald and NZME, New Zealand’s largest publishing media company. The newspaper is printed twice weekly, Tuesday and Thursday, using 45gsm uncoated newsprint on a Goss Community Press offset web commercial print machine by The Gisborne Herald.
